Family Life
By Nicholas Boulton
"If a country is to be corruption free and become a nation of beautiful minds, I strongly feel there are three key societal members who can make a difference. They are the father, the mother and the teacher."

How does college prepare a student for family life afterward? This question can really go two separate directions. The aspects of college that will have a positive impact on family, and simply, the aspects that won’t. Growing up, most people dream of having a family of their own. College has shown us students how to effectively manage our time, communicate, and stay organized; each of which are valuable pieces of a successful family in the future. Assuming a graduate is to get married shortly after college, these three attributes help this student shift their focus from oneself to transitioning these aspects to a family. The aspects of college that will have the most impact on family life are the most demanding and beneficial parts of education.

It is fair to assume that in order to be successful at anything, time management is key. This trait is taught to most college students very early in their journey. However, unfortunate circumstances of possible severe procrastination have taught the others at a later point. But, in any case, college graduates are well versed in time management thus initially preparing them for a family of their own. Many students are focused on much more than just their grades during their college phase of life; whether that may include sports, Greek life, club organizations, or even common social events. They all contribute to the busyness of college students. This busyness is a noteable factor of a family, thus time management is crucial.
Communication is another important element of healthy family life. Communication is the key to any working relationship, and that is exactly what every family should be striving for. Communication has been taught to college students in a number of ways which include simply talking to a professor. Misinformation can occur between a student and professor throughout a given semester, it is then the student’s responsibility to communicate effectively with the professor otherwise the consequences could be seen in their overall grade. Numerous times as student’s, we have been instructed to work in a group to complete a project, undoubtedly, the most important element in completing the task, and involving everyone, is through communication.
Along with communication, academic rigor and organization skills are very similar in the ways they positively affect family life. There is a lot expected of each student at the college level, this only helps them to perform to the best of their ability which will, in turn, enhance work ethic and a willingness to do more. This willingness to do more will become boosted when their own family has begun. They will be able to effectively handle what is expected of them, because being expected of a lot seems familiar to them. Through organization skills students are able to take on the responsibility of the academic rigor of five classes. The organization students must have to complete all assignments, studying, and examinations strongly prepare them for the rigor that family life can bring, as well.
All of these principles not only prepare people for a family after college, but transfer easily to it. However, there are negative aspects of college which may impact a family. For example, through the academic rigor seen in a student’s college years they may become accustom to working hard all the time. This could have the result of not focusing enough time on their family. Secondly, if a student has filled their life with a number of commitments, such as organizations or clubs, they may struggle not falling into the same kind of lifestyle. This could cause a person to be continually on the go and not paying attention to more pressing responsibilities.
Time management, communication, and organization skills have prepared college students for family life. Each of these are significant because students have been taught successfully how to meet deadlines. These aspects translate to family life because they are the most demanding and beneficial parts of a college education.
